HISTORY

Easthampton was originally part of Northampton, which was first settled in 1664. It became its own town in 1785, and was chartered as a city more than 200 years later in 1996.

The town of Easthampton was centered around the Manhan River. It was first settled as an agricultural community, but with the Industrial Revolution became a thriving mill town using the river as an energy source to power the factories. Textiles were the primary item produced here. The Williston-Knight Button Company was the first mill established in Easthampton in 1847, producing profitable cloth-covered buttons. The milling industry thrived and survived until the 1960s, due to government contracts supporting these businesses through World War II.Insurance Easthampton MA

Agriculture remains an important industry in the town, and makes up a large portion of the local economy, along with small businesses.

ART AND CULTURE

Easthampton has developed a budding artist’s community, providing a less expensive alternative to artists than neighboring Northampton, Massachusetts. Converted factory buildings and an old fire station provide studio and workshop space, while local businesses have slowly changed to accommodate this new segment of the population.
