Springfield, Massachusetts is a city located in Hampden County. It is located near several rivers: the Connecticut River, Westfield River, Chicopee River, and Mill River. Springfield covers over 33 square miles, including 4 square miles of parklands. The city has a population of 153,000.
Though many cities across the United States claim the name “Springfield,” Massachusetts is home to the first such city in the country. It is the third largest city in the Commonwealth and the fourth in New England (after Boston, Worcester, and Providence).
Springfield was founded in 1636 by William Pynchon, and named for his hometown in England. In addition to agriculture, its location near many rivers made it an ideal location for a trading post, allowing trades routes to Boston, New York, and north to Montreal. The Springfield National Armory, established by George Washington and Henry Knox ran from 1777 through the Vietnam War, making such contributions as the first American musket and the Springfield rifle.
Known as the “City of Firsts,” the city flourished in the 19th and 20th centuries before seeing a decline after the Armory closed. Today, city leaders have begun a long-term revitalization project, including the proposed MGM Casino project.
